Arkansas and Amarillo

At our “Horse Motel” in Arkansas 
 We left  at 4 a.m. from Tennessee, and headed for Russellville, Arkansas where we had a reservation at  Two B Farms for the night.  Somehow we drove right by it (we saw goats and kept going) but we eventually circled back and were welcomed by a nice guy in overalls named Bobby.  The place was clean and quiet, which was all we really needed... Paul and I layed down at 7:30, and I think the others beat us!

          We got an early start again and drove to Amarillo, Texas to Lone Star Bed and Bale.  First we had a late lunch/early dinner at the famous  Big Texan Steak Ranch, notorious for the 72 oz. Steak Challenge.  There’s LOTS of fine print to the rules, but basically if you can eat every bite of this steak meal (over 4 pounds of beef, shrimp cocktail, salad, baked potato and roll), then you can have your meal for free!  The place was packed, there was live music (yes, we heard “Amarillo by Morning” and “All my Exes Live in Texas”), and we all enjoyed delicious, reasonably-sized steak meals.  We didn’t get to see anyone take the big challenge, probably just as well!

The dogs and horses have been great travelers!

Christmas Departure and Mishap!

         Right before our departure with Sunday and Katie       We made our lists, we checked them twice!  We ‘Christmased” with the family and were finally ready!  Our daughter took some ceremonial photos as we loaded our horses, Sunday and Katie, into the trailer for the first time.  We hugged goodbye and our daughter and her boyfriend headed out the driveway.         Paul had a rough previous night of coughing, so I offered to drive.  As we slowly set off up our narrow, curvy, tree-lined driveway,  he said, “Don’t forget to swing wide,” and then I felt a small jolt as a trailer tire went slightly off the edge of the driveway.  I immediately stopped, looked in the rearview mirror, and my heart lurched as expletives came steadily out of my mouth.  The top edge of the trailer was directly up against a tree!  We both got out to assess the situation.... the truck and trailer we...

Fun in the Desert!

Writing this while I have a bit better WiFi.  We rode to Filly’s Roadhouse and are enjoying sunshine, cold beers and live music.  Getting into the groove of riding almost every day!  More details when we get the chance.  Loving it!

Go West!

        In our semi-retirement, we feel determined to travel, meet interesting and fun people, and nurture our sense of adventure while we are still active and in good health (and perhaps one will foster the other!).  In the last few years, we’ve been blessed to journey to Italy, the British Virgin Islands, Mexico, Iceland, England and the Maldives.  Paul and I have also been regularly taking our horses to our cabin just 3 hours away in the Big South Fork area of North-Central Tennessee to trail ride.          The last several winters at our farm in central Kentucky have been wet and gloomy, so the idea of heading somewhere warm and sunny for part or most of the winter has become appealing.  Some of our “horse friends “ have shared their experiences with winter riding in Florida and Arizona.  When our Tennessee riding buddy Leonard invited us to join a group going to Apache Junction, Arizona for “horse camping” and trail...
